Growing up in Cape Town, South Africa, Grant Smuts had a passion for Fantasy that began when he first read the legends of King Arthur, followed soon after by the Chronicles of Narnia. Eventually, as many aspiring fantasy authors do, he encountered the works of Tolkien, and, inspired by the grand vision he presented to the world, began to pen his own works.
At first strictly a fantasy afficionado, his works at first displayed the common conventions of the genre.
However, growing increasingly frustrated and disillusioned by the limited potential of South African publishing houses (not to mention what they typically accepted for publication to begin with), he soon searched for more cynical works to match his disposition.
He soon found the work of George RR Martin (A Song of Ice and Fire), and found Dark Fantasy to his liking, and then discovered Cosmic Horror through the works of HP Lovecraft and Clarke Ashton Smith (The Cthulhu Mythos).
Seeing potential in the merging of both genres, his vision for his first true novel began.
Grant works part-time in a bookstore, and is currently preparing his debut novel Where the Gods Lie Dreaming for publication.
Beyond that, he enjoys reading, gaming, and very little else, to be honest.
He’s a bit of a grouch, really.
